Experience: 30 plus years
The creation of broccoli varieties that are easy to harvest, have a high yield and harbor a taste that fulfills consumers expectations has fueled Meindert Boon for over 30 years as a dedicated brassica breeder and expert. With a clear vision on market developments, Boon prioritizes becoming a player or trend setter within a specific market.
The breeding of broad performance varieties that offer stability in today’s increasing climate extremes are the biggest challenges tackled by Boon and the global cross-functional R&D team working alongside him. With this and growers’ needs in mind, a broccoli gene pool has been in development for over 25 years working to help extraordinary adapted varieties that meet yield specifications see the light of day.
“Today we are facing an increase in climate extremes. Heat, drought, and erratic rain conditions are all challenges for growers. (…) We have organized our breeding program on a global basis and have R&D facilities in major production areas. This enables us to develop and combine gene pools from many locations, helping our breeders better develop varieties with broad adaptability.”
