Jérôme Bernier, Ph.D.
Experience: 6 Years
Jérôme Bernier is responsible for watermelon breeding in North America, Australia, and South America. He sets up hybrid trials in each major watermelon growing area to identify products that meet growers’ needs — like hollow heart, consistently high brix, and high yields. He also manages breeding nurseries in Chile, Guatemala, Mexico and California. Jérôme serves as vice-chair for the Watermelon Research and Development Group, a group that includes the most important public and private sector watermelon researchers in the United States.
“It’s very rewarding when you see a grower come to you and say, this hybrid is really what I needed.”
