How Seminis® X10R® Leads the Pepper Industry

Monday, January 23, 2017

When it comes to cultivating peppers, there’s a lot of determination that comes from all of us at Seminis®. Each day our growers and breeders work collectively to look for the best ways to provide our customers with products that meet their expectations for appearance and taste.

It’s this commitment we put behind our crops that makes our bell peppers so unique. Combine that with our experience in breeding innovation and the end result is high-quality pepper varieties that harness the full potential of X10R®.

So how exactly does X10R® work?

X10R® gives each plant the power to protect itself by specifically targeting Bacterial leaf spot disease without damaging the plant’s own cells. “XR” refers to races of Bacterial leaf spot (Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria) in peppers. Similarly, Seminis® offers pepper products with different levels of protection:

  • X3R® means the hybrid has resistance to races 0-3, 7 and 8.
  • X5R® means the hybrid has resistance to race 0-5, 7-9.
  • X10R® means the hybrid has a comprehensive resistance to races 0-10.

The image above describes how our advanced breeding X10R® features enable each plant to protect itself from BLS.

Interestingly enough, X10R® was discovered through traditional plant breeding and was developed by our renowned breeders through screening thousands of parental lines and hybrids over many years and across different geographies. This breeding innovation serves as the industry-leading disease resistance package, offering our growers the best comprehensive defense against Bacterial leaf spot. Future products also have the potential to provide an even greater disease package by adding resistance to Phytophthora capsici and even powdery mildew.

As our constant quest to think of our future generations, throughout time our team of experts successfully incorporated X10R® in our seasonal peppers grown all over the Southeast U.S., with the goal in mind of bringing you the best quality, disease resistance and yield potential products we could offer.
