Due to the negative impact TYLCV (Tomato yellow leaf curl virus) can have on growers’ crops, Seminis breeders, researchers and the technology development team have worked for a decade to develop a tomato variety that is resistant to the disease, yet still provides high yield potential and excellent fruit quality. Multiple generations of breeding and trialing have enabled Seminis to gather data and gain insights, leading to the development of Everglade, the newest tomato variety that has the ideal trait package to meet our growers’ needs.
Everglade went through more than five years of experimental trialing, which included pre-commercial trialing and working directly with the breeders, before the decision was made to commercialize this product. A select group of Seminis growers trialed the variety in their fields and have observed good fruit quality and large yields, and have shared how well-adapted the variety is for their region.
The Seminis Everglade tomato variety is also resistant to Fusarium wilt (races 1-3) and Fusarium crown and root rot. It has exceptionally high fruit quality with smooth skin and a deep red color with tiny blossom end scars, and is expected to be available for purchase this summer.
