With so many different seed and plant varieties to choose from, home gardeners can find themselves completely overwhelmed by all the choices. Thankfully there is an independent, non-profit organization called All-America Selections® (AAS) that tests new varieties then designates only the best garden performers as AAS® Winners. Grown in All-America Selections trials, the varieties are judged by independent AAS judges in geographically diverse areas all over the U.S. and Canada. Judging is done after the growing period and on a five-point scale, five being the highest ranking. The organization awards national and regional winners. This year, Seminis Home Garden claimed four national winners and two regional winners. National awards are given to varieties that perform well across North America and regional winners are designated as varieties that perform well in specific regions. The organization’s tagline, “Tested Nationally and Proven Locally®,” guarantees home gardeners that AAS winning varieties have proven their superiority in trials across North America and so will be more likely to be successful in their own garden. Judged by skilled, impartial judges, the winners are a true representation of the most improved varieties of the year. All-America Selections was created in 1932 in the infancy of the “Garden Club” movement when home, farm seed and florist magazines were in need of reliable garden news. Trials have been conducted every year since, with the number of judges, test sites and varieties tested varying every year. The four categories of trials and awards are Flower, Bedding Plant, Vegetable and Cool Season Bedding Plant. AAS continues to serve as the oldest, most established testing organization in North America. So what are the AAS judges looking for? In the last ten years an entry needs to have at least two significantly improved qualities to be considered by judges for an AAS Award. Judges look for significantly improved qualities such as earliness to bloom or harvest, disease or pest tolerance, novel colors or flavors, novel flower forms, total yield, length of flowering or harvest and overall performance. Seminis Home Garden strives to develop products that meet the unique needs of home gardeners across the country. Recognition from organizations like AAS reinforces Seminis’ dedication to providing the highest quality and best tasting varieties to its many different customers.
